Lay's Cheesy Garlic Bread Chips
Flavor Contest
Recently, Lays had a contest to come up with a new flavor for their potato chip line. Called "Do us a Flavor", the goal was to find a fantastic new chip flavor. To make it interesting, Lays offered one million dollars to the winner.
That winner was Karen Weber-Mendham, a librarian from Wisconsin. The flavor is Cheesy Garlic Bread.
Karen says she was inspired when she saw her three boys devouring garlic bread along with their pizza. We have to hand it to Karen: while most people would find the sight of a bunch of kids devouring breadsticks abhorrent, she found it moving and turned it into a million dollars!
So get to the local grocery store and grab a bag -- they've already begun appearing on shelves.
The Review
So how do they measure up?
First and foremost, a word of warning: don't eat them if you're on your way to an important meeting or a nice night with the wife! There's a pronounced garlic aftertaste. Is that a negative? Well, the goal of this product is to provide garlicky goodness, so one might say "mission accomplished" so it's totally up to you.
Secondly, have you been trying some of the new flavors that Lays has been coming out with? They're not as crispy as the originals. Lays has never been known for having a real crispy chip (look to Ruffles or something else) but these are soft.
Taste and texture-wise, the line between the Baked Lays and the regular Lays has been blurred a bit and the regular flavors have that "baked" taste to them. Some people prefer it and might find this to be good news.
If you're looking for some soft garlic goodness and don't have garlic bread on hand, this will be a fine substitute. The taste and texture they're going for emulate garlic bread pretty well. Paired the runner-up flavor (Chicken and Waffles) and some other food-substitute flavors they might be coming out with, you can eventually stop eating real food altogether.
